Mick Abel, former 15th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, has made the climb up the Phillies prospect list and landed at the #2 spot. The 6’5″ right-hander out of Oregon has a commanding mid-to-upper 90s fastball with a glove game to match. Mick took some time to show off his two Nike SHADO Elite Js for this year and answer a few questions for us.
Abel put together two super clean gamers for 2023. The first is an all black two-piece that adds a red liner and baby blue accents. A subtle look that came together beautifully. The second features a gray base with black binding, welting, and laces. The Double V web and pop of red on the Swoosh/liner make for a winning combo.
The Q and A
Q: Growing up in Oregon, what does it mean to be a Nike athlete?
A: “It means the world to me. I always wore Nike growing up, so it’s a dream come true.”
Q: Do you put anything special on your gloves? (Someone’s name, a date, a bible verse, etc)
A: “I wrote “CP” on my gloves for this year. My close friend and teammate Corey Phelan passed away during the fall after battling cancer, and this is a way I can keep him with me on the mound.”
Q: What’s the biggest adjustment you’ve had to make since being drafted?
A: “Biggest adjustment has been my routine on days I’m not pitching. Always have to stay on top of my routine to stay healthy and in a good spot mentally.”
Q: Biggest piece of advice you would give your younger self?
A: “I would tell myself to control what I can control on the mound. Don’t worry about what’s out of your hands or else the game will speed up on you quick.”
