A recent poll found that nearly four in ten adults who struggle with their bills don’t ask for help. For many, it’s down to stigma, embarrassment, or feeling the process is too complicated.

But help is out there, and it’s free.

Why people aren’t asking for support

The survey revealed that:

  • 35% of people sometimes struggle to pay their energy bills.
  • 34% keep it to themselves because of embarrassment, up from 28% last year.
  • Almost half of 25-34 year olds say stigma is their biggest barrier.
  • Over half of people now find it difficult to even talk about struggling with bills

Instead of reaching out for professional advice, many turn first to friends, family, or repayment plans with their supplier.

But there are charities and independent organisations ready to help – and many people don’t even realise they qualify.

Free face-to-face advice at your local Post Office

To tackle this, the British Gas Energy Trust has partnered with the Post Office and local money and energy advice charities to launch a year-long programme of free pop-up sessions.

From September 2025 to September 2026, 120 drop-in events will run across the UK, offering practical support such as:

  • Help with energy debt grants and write-offs.
  • Budget planning and benefit checks.
  • Advice on lowering bills with simple energy-saving changes.
  • Free energy-saving devices to take home.

These sessions are open to everyone, no matter who your supplier is. Advisors will be on hand in cities including Leicester, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Liverpool, and more.

One attendee shared: “I had tried everywhere but was just being passed around. It’s taken a big weight off my shoulders.”

Why this matters now

With colder months coming, bills can quickly mount up.

Research shows that homeowners are currently more likely than renters to struggle with energy payments, and two-thirds of people believe there should be more government and charity schemes to help manage rising costs.

Skint Dad’s take

“Money worries can feel isolating, but struggling with bills isn’t something to be ashamed of. These pop-up sessions give real, practical help – and sometimes just having that first conversation can make a huge difference.

How to get support

If you’re worried about your bills, check if there’s a Post Office pop-up near you. Dates are being rolled out throughout the year, and you can find more information on the British Gas Energy Trust website: www.britishgasenergytrust.org.uk.

Even if you think you won’t qualify, it’s worth asking. The right advice could save you hundreds of pounds a year – and a lot of stress.
